Similarities Between Government Schools and Government Health Care

Similarities Between Government Schools (K-12) and Government Health Care as Compared to the Private Sector Services

Funding the System

Because of the fact that government public schools are funded primarily through state taxes and property taxes, parents with kids in private schools pay twice (or more) to have their kids in private schools. The government says, “You must pay into our system, but if you elect not to use our system you may use an outside system at your own expense also.”

The current health care debate contains the identical thinking. Those trying to push government health insurance/care “say” that anyone participating in a private system will not be required to convert to the public system. But as in the public school system, it will become impossible for many in the middle class to afford private health insurance and also pay for the public system through taxes or some other “not yet thought of” method. And make no mistake my friend, everyone who earns money will have to contribute.

Now, here is the “dirty little secret” about the price of public school vs. private school. Private schools are less expensive than public schools. Before your jaw drops to the floor, let me explain. Sure, Sidwell Friends School where the Obama kids attend runs about $29K per student per year (2009-2010 school year). According the heritage.org website, average public school per pupil spending was $9266 for the 2004-2005 school year (why does it take so long to keep these stats up to date). But, but, but. For every Sidwell, there are dozens and dozens of private schools across America that are significantly less expensive than the $9266 average public school expenditure. In fact, the school voucher system is one way that states could help to solve their current budget problems and in the long run lower state taxes and property taxes.

Quality of the System

It is generally undisputed that private schools are far superior to the government public system in terms of the education received by the students. Numerous studies point to the fact that private schooled children score higher and are better prepared for college. It only makes sense that parents (that can afford) who pay a premium for private
school are going to expect more for their money and that private schools are going to have to deliver to stay in business. It also makes sense that if parents were not double or triple taxed, more could afford private schools and achieve the result of better educated children.

Now look at our health care system. There is no doubt that the private system of doctors and hospitals provides a superior product in terms of quality “and quantity” when compared to the Veterans Administration hospitals and other government health care organizations. Even so, the Obama White House thinks they can do it better. Please, tell me when the government could actually “compete” with the private sector. This thinking is so wrongheaded. Where I come from they call it “ignorance gone to seed”.

Cost of the System

This is the area that the Obama White House likes to concentrate on in the health care debate. They contend that passing their idea of health care reform will lower the cost of health care. As with the private/public school analogy, more government control over the health care system will bring added similarities. First of all, the government health care bureaucracy will greatly expand. This means feeding the bureaucracy with money that cannot be used to lower health care costs. Of course this means more unionization of all areas in health care. It’s starting to look more and more like public education.

It has been widely reported of the disparities in quantity of health care currently given in the U.S. private system vs. the Canadian or British public system. In the U.S. we have more hi-tech medical machines per capita than Canada and England. Wait times to see doctors and specialists are significantly lower in the U.S. Because of the bloated and inefficient bureaucracy “needed” to administer government health care, the only way to lower health care expenditures is to ration that care. Are even a small percentage of Americans willing to put up with higher death rates, long waits for service and more pain to get cheaper rationed health care?

Our government could lower the price of public education in K-12. We could cut back the school year to 6 months or only require education to grade 8. What would you think of that?

More to Come

Why would anyone want the health care system to be “reformed” this way. It will fail. This is a sad situation because we will actually be losing the opportunity to make real market-based improvements which could actually lower health care costs. I will talk about these in a later post

Hands on our Throat

Barak Obama has his hands on the throat of the American free enterprise system and the choking is well underway. The President’s plan is to go and keep on going until and unless he is somehow stopped. The plan has been well designed by the White House to pick the low-hanging fruit first and hope the other fruit ripens in the mean time.

The lowest hanging fruit was the “stimulus” package. Packed full of pork for Obama’s willing accomplices in the Congress, it was relatively easy to pass the largest budget busting bill in American history. Of course, all of this has been helped along by the persistent recession. Rahm Emanuel gave us a clear understanding of the way these people think when he said “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste. And what I mean by that is an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”

The second step in the choking and central planning movement is the so called “cap and trade” bill. This bill will cripple key energy related industries, keep unemployment high, hurt America’s ability to compete in the world and generally worsen the financial crisis we are already in.

The third step in Obama’s plan is national health care. In this step the government takes over another 20% of the economy that they don’t already control. Quality and quantity of health care goes down and the size of government goes up. The government now has total control over what we do with our bodies.

As you will notice, the possibility for success goes down with each additional step, but that doesn’t mean that Obama will not be successful.

The fourth step in Mr. Obama’s plan is immigration reform. In this step, we welcome from twelve to twenty million new citizens into our country. And with this we are now legally (in Obama’s world) responsible for the health care, education and any other needs of the new citizens as the “messiah government” now has total control of our lives.
